Nautical information
Port of Delfzijl - Zeehavenkanaal
The Zeehavenkanaal, the eastern part of the outer harbour, has been developed
as a deepsea harbour. Vessels proceeding through the harbour entrance
arrive directly in the Zeehavenkanaal. Going westwards, the Zeehavenkanaal
gradually narrows.
Navigable width is 100 metres throughout in a westerly direction, with
the exception of a small part off the Akzo Nobel bulk salt terminal where
the width is 80 metres.
All vessels navigating Zeehavenkanaal have right of way over vessels coming
from the access channel to the sea locks.
Major port industries have private mooring facilities in the Zeehavenkanaal
area. These jetties and berths are located along the Zeehavenkanaal in
such a way that the channel width of 100 metres, except near the Akzo
jetty, is not affected.

Port of Delfzijl - Handelshaven
The Handelshaven-basin is situated near the town of Delfzijl and is equipped
with a quay of 1,220 metres length. In the western part of the Handelshaven-basin
there is an old quay of 550 metres in use for little, new enterprises
with no cargo handling facilities. The name of this quay is Handelskade-West
(sections A, B and C).
In front of this quay, there is also a floating jetty with a length of
320 meters; the jetty has berths on both sides. The jetty is exploited
by Groningen Seaports and suitable for all kinds of vessels up to 30,000
tons dead-weight (DWT). The yacht harbour of the Royal Rowing and Sailing
Club ‘Neptunus’ is situated between this floating jetty and
the quay and can be reached through the opening near the harbour bridge.
A very new quay in the eastern part of the Handelshaven-basin has been
constructed and is fully under exploitation by private companies. At this
quay, the stevedores can handle general and bulk cargoes.

Port of Delfzijl - Oosterhornhaven
The Oosterhornhaven is under jurisdiction of Groningen Seaports.
The Oosterhornhaven has an open connection with the Eemskanaal and has
the function of an industrial inner harbour.
Vessels navigating the Oosterhornhaven have to pass the ‘Weiwerderbrug’,
a drawbridge with a clearance of 14 metres.
The depth in the Oosterhornhaven is nap -5.20 metres. Water-level drop,
due to sluicing, occurs in the Oosterhornhaven as well.
With the exception of the western part - where the navigable width is
90 metres - the Oosterhornhaven has a navigable width of 60 metres.
The other part of the Oosterhornhaven is a L-shaped extension, which runs
in southerly direction for 600 metres and for about 900 metres up to the
Heemskesbrug direction.
At the northern slope are a bulk salt loading installation, several quays
and jetties for the handling of chemical products and raw materials, facilities
for waiting vessels and a fully equipped jetty of Methanor, where volatile
liquid chemicals may be handled in or out of inland tankers and seagoing
coastal tankers. Beyond the ‘Heemskesbrug’ the port extends
for another 1,100 metres.
The maximum allowed length of seagoing vessels in the Oosterhornhaven
is 90 metres.
The following quays and jetties are situated alongside the Oosterhornhaven:

Eemshaven
The Eemshaven is a commercial and industrial port complex in an area
reclaimed from the sea in the years 1970 until 1974. It comprises 1,210
hectares. Groningen Seaports manages the port, as well as the industrial
area.
The port is divided in:
1 Doekegatkanaal (entrance)
2 Julianahaven
3 Emmahaven
4 Wilhelminahaven
Eemshaven - Doekegatkanaal (entrance)
At present, the Eemshaven is accessible for vessels with an operational
draft up to 10.50 metres, under normal HW conditions. Future dredging
will enable vessels with a draft of 13 metres to use the port.
The distance between the two moles is 470 metres. The bottom-width is
200 metres with an initial depth of NAP -12 metres.
At the western mole, a green fixed light and at the eastern mole a red
fixed light have been erected on steel structures.
The Doekegatkanaal has a width at the entrance of 325 metres (bottom-width
200 metres) and a length of 2,100 metres. At the end of the Doekegatkanaal
a swinging basin is situated with a diameter of 500 metres and a depth
of 9 metres. To the east of the swinging basin the Wilhelminahaven-basin
is situated with a length of 600 metres, a bottom-width of 200 metres
and a depth of 15 to 17 metres.
To the west of the swinging basin, two other basins are situated, viz.:
a Julianahaven with a length of 1,200 metres, a bottom-width of 200 to
250 metres and a depth of 14 to 17 metres;
b Emmahaven with a length of 500 metres, a bottom-width of 120 to 150
metres and a depth of 10 metres.
Eemshaven - Julianahaven
The basin has a length of 1,200 metres and a breadth of 200 to 250 metres
at a depth of 14 to 17 metres.
Northern bank - Bulkquay
Along the northern bank of the Julianahaven-basin a public bulk quay has
been built with the following particulars:
| Type of mooring facility: |
quay |
| Length of mooring facility: |
200 metres (in 2004 extended by 200 metres) |
| Design depth: |
15 metres |
| Kadehoogte: |
4.40 metres above NAP |
Western bank - RoRo Terminal
Along the western bank of the Julianahaven-basin a ro-ro terminal is situated,
managed by an independent operator.
The ro-ro bridge has been devised in such a way that sea-going ships
can be loaded and unloaded rapidly and efficiently with no problems whatsoever.
The bridge has 3 lanes, so that vehicles can drive on and off the ship
simultaneously, facilitating simultaneous loading and unloading.
The ramp (operated hydraulically):
| Length: |
approx. 35 metres |
| Width: |
approx. 20 metres |
| Headroom: |
approx. 10 metres |
| Load: |
reach-stacker (100 tonnes) |
| Project cargo: |
up to 300 tonnes |
| Maximum gradient: |
10 degrees |
The whole structure is protected by a fender beam.
Southern bank
Along the southern bank of the Julianahaven-basin a quay is situated
with a length of 1,150 metres and a width of 200 to 250 metres ultimately
for handling general cargo, ro-ro- and container traffic. The quay level
is 4.40 metres above NAP at quayside and 4.80 metres above NAP at the
centre of the quay. This private quay is in operation by the following
stevedoring firms.
