Eemshaven - Shortsea Area
Groningen
Seaports constructs a dedicated shortsea harbour in the Eemshaven:
the Beatrix harbour. A loading/unloading quay is constructed on
the southern part of the new harbour. The quay is supported by an
area of 5 hectares. Groningen Seaports plans to develop the harbour
in phases with the aim of attracting a range of new customers involved
in shortsea shipping services – particularly coasters, feederships
and ro-ro vessels. This is very much in line with the European Union’s
‘Motorways of the Sea’ campaign to ease the pressure
on Europe’s roads by encouraging the use of shortsea transport.
Sites for permanent use can be bought or leased and it is also possible
to build a private terminal behind the quay. There is still enough
space for new establishments.
