Handelshaven

Handelshaven

Handelshaven is the logistic heart of the port area and is located near the old city centre of Delfzijl. The Trade Wharf has a depth of 9 metres. The eastern part of this port, Handelskade Oost, is destined for professional shipping and has a mooring capacity of 850 metres divided into two quays.

Behind this wharf Wagenborg and Wijnne Barends are transhipping general cargo and bulk goods. Both stevedore companies store and tranship timber, containers, paper, china clay, pulp, general cargo and various other goods. There is also a floating jetty in front of the wharf, which is used for commercial purposes and on which ships can moor on either side. Furthermore a significant area of the Delfzijl harbour accommodates one of the most modern and versatile shipyards of the Netherlands, the yard of Royal Niestern Sander.

The shipbuilding yard is fully equipped for the engineering and construction of ships up to 14,000 dwt. The western part of Handelshaven, the Western Trade Wharf and Damsterhaven, no longer have any loading and unloading facilities and this section is the port’s maritime tourist attraction with a harbour boulevard, small (maritime) companies and a yachting marina.
