The construction of a hydrogen filling station in Delfzijl is a step closer

The construction of a hydrogen filling station has started at Chemical Park Delfzijl. Groningen Seaports is building the hydrogen pipe to this hydrogen filling station. The excavation works signify a specific step towards zero-emissions public transport in 2030, based on clean and sustainable fuels. The works in Delfzijl are the result of a cooperation agreement signed earlier this year. With two hydrogen buses, local authorities, public-transport companies and business are working together on making mobility more sustainable.

Apart from its application in mobility, the availability of green hydrogen in Delfzijl offers plenty of opportunities to strengthen the regional chemical sector. “This offers prospects for future growth and an increased use of hydrogen in the chemical sector”, commented Site Director Johan Visser of the Chemical Park. “That starts with using hydrogen for sustainable mobility, but has a powerful follow-up in the planned greening of the economy. This dovetails the opportunities the Willems Committee identified for the region.”

The green hydrogen is produced by AkzoNobel in a fully integrated industrial chain. Groningen Seaports is building the hydrogen pipe to the PitPoint hydrogen filling station, which is set to be completed in December, and that will be used to fill up the two hydrogen buses of Qbuzz. The Public Transport office OV-bureau – client for public transport in the province – and the Provincial Executive have already expressed their intentions to scale up to 20 hydrogen buses. AkzoNobel is considering the use of some service vehicles on the Delfzijl site.
Besides the aforementioned parties, FCH JU, High V.LO-City and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment are closely involved with the project.
