Logistics

One of the strong points of Groningen Seaports is its excellent access by sea, road, rail, and inland shipping. The ports have a very favourable strategic location in respect of northwest Europe in particular.

The access of the ports is ideal, with a substantial depth and hardly any waiting times. The logistics activities in the ports have increased significantly over the past years, as the arrival of new businesses in the Groningen seaports produces new cargo flows.

Groningen Seaports provides the infrastructure and facilities to accommodate logistics businesses in the port. With the presence of a heliport in Eemshaven, the ports can also be accessed by air. Furthermore, the international airport Groningen Airport Eelde is 45 minutes away.

Groningen Railport

Groningen Railport in Veendam is one of the Netherlands’ largest inland rail terminals. Groningen Railport manages the terminal on the instructions of the shareholders Groningen Seaports and Veendam Council. Groningen Railport is a trimodal terminal (accessible by rail, road, and water) and deals with containers and conventional cargo. The rail terminal provides a total logistics service to shipping companies and transport companies

Groningen Railport is particularly important for containers as a logistics hub between the most important ports in the west (Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Antwerp) and the north (Bremen, Hamburg).

Hyperloop

On the site of Groningen Railport, there is a unique 420-metre-long hyperloop test track. A hyperloop is a futuristic means of transport and in essence a type of tube mail for people. This test facility and open information centre is owned by the European Hyperloop Center (EHC). High-tech and other companies, industry, and science work together on developing the hyperloop. The test track is open to any business and knowledge organisation that wishes to develop, demonstrate and/or validate its system or subsystem for the hyperloop or associated technologies.
