Frontrunner in biobased chemical industry & circular industry

The province of Groningen has it all to be a frontrunner in the biobased circular transition. Our region has an excellent infrastructure and has many renewable raw materials and residual waste available from agriculture and the energy sector.

At Groningen Seaports we have the required, and internationally recognised, expertise in house, and we have green energy. Both are needed to further develop and improve the biobased chemical industry and circular industry. That means we can make a major contribution to make society more sustainable and circular. Therefore, we focus on the biobased chemical industry & circular industry cluster. Our ambition is for the Groningen Seaports management area to be fully circular in 2040.

Circular economy

In Delfzijl and Eemshaven, a large share of Dutch green energy is generated and it is also the place where it arrives from other countries. It forms the basis for our sustainable energy provision, and is used in the green chemical industry, which forms the basis for producing many products. All of this will only be truly sustainable when these industries achieve circular operations. That means all the waste and residual flows are reused as a raw material for others in the chain. Groningen Seaports plays an active role here.

The Oosterhorn industrial area is the home of many businesses in the green chemical industry, circular economy, and energy. Ideal circumstances come together here to create a state-of-the-art circular cluster. On the south side of the Oosterhorn canal, we are developing, under the flag of Chemport Europe: Circulands. The circular park of the future.

Circulands

Circulands is an innovative and circular industrial park of Groningen Seaports in Delfzijl that provides businesses with the opportunity to achieve fully circular operations. Circulands will be the business park of the future with optimum facilities for circular initiatives and businesses. The site (400 hectares) south of the Oosterhorn canal will be set up with utilities that will be needed in the next 15 years to achieve the transition to circular. It is focused on three spearheads: the circular design and set-up of the area, the location of circular businesses, and the creation of circular chains. Circulands is the optimum site for demo plants in the green chemical sector and the circular economy.

Circular materials

The park has a circular construction from the ground up. It was largely built with recycled raw materials and materials, such as dredge spoil to raise the site, and pedestrian bridges of recycled materials.

Circular businesses

All businesses that locate here are specialised in reusing residual flows or contribute to that reuse. At Circulands we recycle e-waste, plastics, wind-turbine blades, construction materials, and biobased materials.

Circular exchange

Circulands can exchange gases with the adjacent chemical park. For example, a pipe line infrastructure is under construction that will make the residual flows of one a valuable raw material for another. This applies to residual heat in the form of steam, to nitrogen, hydrogen, industrial water, and more.

Value creation
At Circulands we want to achieve the highest possible upgrading and value creation. Collected plastics become building blocks for new consumer products. What remains turns into new raw materials for the green chemical sector and manufacturing industry. What remains of that, is used for energy. It means everything is turned into value.

The cycle of nature was the source of inspiration for the construction and layout of this park. Circulands uses natural elements and a lot of landscaping in an attractive environment. Groningen Seaports is proud of this innovative park, where we set an example for circular industrial parks of the future.

The opportunity for fully circular business operations
