Attractive location for startups and scale-ups

Ambitious startups and scale-ups are extremely important to a region’s economic development. They create dynamism and innovation, and attract talented people, often with a technological slant. In the Groningen Seaports management area, there have been and still are a number of successful pilots.

Not least due to the supply of pilot and demo facilities, the port area of Delfzijl and Eemshaven is ideally suited to the startup sector. For example, chemical company Avantium uses the site of Nobian (formerly AkzoNobel) for a pilot factory. These days, Avantium is actually located in Delfzijl with a commercial factory.

Chemport Innovation Center (CIC)

Space for laboratories or a demo plant is also available on other industrial parks. In Delfzijl, a former factory hall was converted specifically for scale-ups: the Chemport Innovation Center (CIC). The CIC is there to facilitate, stimulate, and support startups and scale-ups in the Chemport region to further develop their sustainable, innovative products to scale up to the construction of their own plant in the short or medium term. By now, various parties have used or are still using the CIC:

  • ExxFire
  • Geowall
  • UPPACT
