Sea shipping rates
Port dues are charged for the use of the port by seagoing vessels. The International Tonnage Certificate (ITC) is accepted as the basis for the port dues for all vessels.
Groningen Seaports states its port rates in the document Port Rates 2026. This booklet contains all types of rates, including seaport dues, inland port dues, quay dues, towage rates, etc. It does not contain the pilot rates, as they can be found on the website of Loodswezen [Dutch Pilots’ Association]. In its ports, Groningen Seaports applies a unique rates system for common types of goods: seagoing vessels pay per tonne of transshipped goods and not for the gross tonnage of the vessels. This makes both ports highly competitive in their pricing. Also, the ports barely have any waiting times.
Port waste
Seagoing vessels are required by law to make an indirect contribution to the collection and processing of ship-generated waste. Therefore, seagoing vessels pay a charge when putting into ports managed by Groningen Seaports, even if they don’t deposit waste (consequently, discharging into the sea offers no financial benefit). Seagoing vessels are given a ‘right to dispose’ after paying the levy. The ‘right to dispose’ is a sum based on the vessel’s Gross Tonnage (see table).
