The construction of the Google building means that two existing farms will disappear. However, these farms are frequently used by bats, which due to the demolition work are at risk of losing their home in this part of Eemshaven.
As bats are protected under the Flora and Fauna Act, a solution will have to be found. This solution is now in place: a bat tower has been built. The building is more than six metres high, three metres wide and three metres long, and it consists of bricks which have not been laid very straight on purpose. This gives the bats a good grip in the cavity wall. The north side of the tower has an extra internal wall, creating a double cavity wall. The bats think it is a great place for hibernating. The tower was built in full consultation with the relevant environmental body.
